Why Feeling Awkward in Photos Is Completely Normal

by Tampa headshot photographer Nina Bashaw

If you've ever looked at a professional headshot photo of someone and thought, "I could never look that comfortable in front of a camera," you're not alone.

In fact, one of the most common things I hear as a Tampa photographer is, "I'm so awkward in photos." Whether I'm photographing professional headshots, senior portraits, branding sessions, or couples, people often arrive convinced they're going to be the most difficult person I've ever photographed. They apologize before we've even started and tell me they have no idea what to do with their hands. The funny thing is that almost everyone says the exact same thing.

1: Most People Are Not Used to Being Photographed

Think about it. How often are you standing in front of a professional camera with all of the attention focused on you? For most people, the answer is almost never. Being photographed is not a normal everyday experience, so it's completely understandable to feel self-conscious when someone points a camera in your direction. Suddenly, you're aware of your smile, your posture, your hands, and every little thing you normally never think about.

That feeling isn't a sign that you're bad at photos. It's simply a sign that you're human. Most people aren't walking around every day practicing poses or learning how to look natural in front of a camera. When you understand that, it becomes much easier to realize that feeling awkward isn't a personal flaw. It's actually the most common reaction people have.

Most seniors tell me they're nervous before their session. A few minutes later, they're laughing, relaxing, and wondering why they worried so much in the first place.

Feeling awkward in front of the camera is completely normal. The goal isn't perfection—it's creating photos that capture your personality and tell your story.

You don't have to know how to pose to get beautiful photos. My job is to guide you every step of the way so your images feel natural and genuinely you.

2: Social Media Has Changed Our Expectations

One reason people feel awkward is because they compare themselves to the images they see online. We scroll through Instagram and see people who appear perfectly comfortable, confident, and effortless in front of the camera. What we don't see are the hundreds of photos that weren't chosen, the direction they received from their photographer, or the years they've spent becoming comfortable being photographed.

Most professional photographs are not spontaneous moments captured by accident. They're the result of good lighting, thoughtful direction, and a professional photographer who knows how to help people relax. The people whose photos you admire often felt nervous too. The difference is that you're only seeing the finished image, not everything that happened behind the scenes to create it.

3: You Don't Need to Know How to Pose

This is probably the biggest misconception people have before a session. Many people think they need to show up to their headshot or senior portrait session already knowing how to pose, smile, stand, and move. They worry that they'll somehow fail at being photographed because they aren't naturally comfortable in front of the camera.

The truth is, you don't need to know any of that. That's my job. When clients hire a photographer, they aren't paying for someone to simply press a button. They're hiring someone to guide them through the entire process and help them look their best. During sessions, I provide direction the whole time. I'll tell you where to stand, how to angle your body, where to look, and what to do with your hands. More importantly, I'll help create movement and interaction so your photos feel natural rather than stiff or forced. Each shoot is tailored to you. How I poses a headshot is different than how I pose senior portraits. I don't go by a shot list that we check off aawkward poses. I customize the session to you,

Most business owners tell me they feel nervous before their branding session. The best photos usually happen once they stop worrying about the camera and start focusing on what they love doing.

You don't need modeling experience to have beautiful branding photos. Sometimes the most natural images come from simply doing what you do every day.

4: The Goal Isn't Perfection

One of the biggest reasons people become uncomfortable is because they're trying to be perfect. They focus on having the perfect smile, the perfect posture, and the perfect expression. The more pressure we put on ourselves to get everything exactly right, the more unnatural we tend to feel.

The truth is that the most meaningful photographs rarely come from perfection. They come from genuine moments. The laugh that wasn't planned, the smile that appears when you stop thinking about the camera, and the expression that actually looks like you are often the photographs clients end up loving the most. Real emotion will always feel more powerful than a perfectly posed image.

5: Everyone Starts Out Feeling a Little Nervous

I've photographed people of all ages and backgrounds throughout Sarasota, Tampa and Wesley Chapel, from high school seniors and business owners to executives, entrepreneurs, couples, and restaurant owners. No matter who is standing in front of my camera, the conversation before the session is often very similar.

Most people tell me they're nervous. They worry about looking awkward, feeling uncomfortable, or not knowing what to do. Then something interesting happens. Once the session gets started and they realize they're not expected to perform, they begin to relax. By the end of the session, they're usually surprised by how much fun they had. The awkward feeling tends to fade once you stop focusing on the camera and start focusing on the experience.

The best branding photos often happen when people are focused on their craft instead of the camera. Sometimes simply doing what you love is the easiest way to look natural in photos.

Not every branding session is about people posing for the camera. Food, products, and the details that make a business unique all help tell the story of a brand.

Many business owners worry they'll feel awkward in front of the camera, but authentic moments often come from genuine interactions and the work you do every day.

6: What If I Really Hate Having My Photo Taken?

If you're reading this and thinking, "No, you don't understand. I truly hate having my picture taken," that's okay too. You're actually the type of person I love working with because I know how common that feeling is. Some of my favorite client reactions come from people who spent weeks worrying about their session only to tell me afterward that it wasn't nearly as bad as they expected.

You don't need to be naturally photogenic. You don't need modeling experience. You don't need to spend hours practicing poses in front of a mirror. You simply need a headshot photographer who understands that feeling awkward is normal and knows how to help you move past it. My job is to create an environment where you can relax, be yourself, and walk away with timeless, and true to color photographs that feel authentic to who you are.

Some of the most natural senior portraits happen when there's movement and conversation, not when you're standing perfectly still trying to look "photogenic."

Feeling a little awkward at the beginning of a photo session is completely normal. Confidence usually comes from being guided through the experience, not from showing up already knowing what to do.

7: The Truth About Feeling Awkward in Photos

The people you admire in professional photographs aren't necessarily more confident than you. More often than not, they're working with someone who knows how to create an environment where they can relax and be themselves. Confidence in photos isn't something you're born with. It's often the result of feeling comfortable, supported, and guided throughout the experience.

Feeling awkward in photos is completely normal. It's not something you need to fix before booking a session. It's something a good photographer should help you overcome. Whether you're booking professional headshots, senior portraits, branding photos, or an elopement know that you don't have to show up confident. You just have to show up, and together we'll take care of the rest.
